A traditional festival paying homage to Spain’s History, culture and commemoration of Saint Joseph. With time this festival has evolved to be something different and huge. Earlier; Valencian carpenters and artisans plied their trades under candlelight, using pieces of wood called parots as wick holders. Coming of spring, when sunlight replaced candlelight, the parots(“torches”) were burned (La Cremà). and as a part of evolution the Parots also evolved to be a cartoonish human figure which is very huge and beautiful and this fallas is set on fire on the last date of the festival. During the earlier days people take out parade in traditional outfit and light fire crackers, offers flowers to the Valencia’s patron saint. and at the last the entire city and it streets emerges to be a dance party. Warning from my end: Don’t plan to have sufficient sleep as the city parties around the clock with explosions throughout the night.

The night before Holi, bonfires are lit in a ceremony known as Holika Dahan (burning of Holika) or Little Holi. People gather near fires, sing and dance. The second day is the festival of colour or “Dhuleti”, celebrated by sprinkling coloured water and applying colours to each other. To
further enhance the festive spirit of Holi celebrations we have a social sanction to get a kick with the tradition of bhang. Then there is total wildness as people dance to the rhythm of dholak and sing traditional folk songs in loudest possible pitch.
Children particularly enjoy the festival as they throw water filled balloons at passersby…and if anybody stares..they have ready answer, ‘Bura na mano Holi hai..’ and evoke a smile on the irritated face. Besides, they have their water missiles, called pichkaris to drench the person from far and escape further drenching.
In the midst of these colouring games are savored the mouth watering holi specialities like gujiya, malpuas, mathri, puran poli, dahi badas etc and downed with glasses full of thandai.
The Holi celebrations are unique in different regions and can last from one day to 16. In most places, it’s a three-day affair. If you can’t make it to India, there’s a good chance you can participate locally because most international Indian communities celebrate Holi.
